Timeline of Events


This year’s Finger Lakes Plein Air Competition & Festival will run from June 6 – 11, 2017 and will again be held under the auspices of the Ontario County Arts Council.  The event will feature over forty talented artists from across the United States and Canada who will paint the beauty of Canandaigua and the Finger Lakes. The event will bring in art lovers and collectors, as well as those who want to participate in the community-centered events planned for downtown Canandaigua.  An exhibition and sale will be held on the final day of the event at the historic site of Sonnenberg Gardens in Canandaigua.

January 31, 2017 – Application submission deadline for Artists. The application deadline is now closed, please check back in Fall 2017 for the 2018 application.

Friday, May 26 – Saturday, June 10 – Community Voting for Les Petits

The week of the Finger Lakes Plein Air Festival & Competition:
Tuesday, June 6 – Registration
9:00am-8:00pm — Artists may register at the festival Headquarters, and may begin painting any time after registration. Headquarters address: Pat Rini Rohrer Gallery, 71 S. Main Street, Canandaigua (parking behind the gallery in a rear lot, east of Main Street.)

Tuesday, June 6 – June 10 Canandaigua Downtown Merchants “Adopt An Artist”
10:00am-6:00pm — Artists will be paired with Canandaigua Downtown Merchants to exhibit for sale studio and other work in Downtown Canandaigua Merchants’ windows. This is a great chance to check out more work by the artists and purchase their original artwork during the entire week of the festival! An Art Walk and Reception for artists with work in Canandaigua Downtown Merchants select location will be held on Thursday, June 8 from 6:00 -8:00pm.

Wednesday, June 7 – Paint Out along the Canandaigua Wine Trail, Naples, NY
9:00am-5:00pm — Works created by the juried in Plein Air Artists throughout the day at local participating wineries along the Canandaigua Lake Wine Trail.
6:00-8:00pm — Wet paint sale & reception at Hazlitt’s Red Cat Cellars (1 Lake Niagara Ln, Naples, NY)

Thursday, June 8 –  Canandaigua Downtown Merchants “Adopt An Artist” Art Walk and Reception
5:00-8:00pm — Artists will be paired with Canandaigua Downtown Merchants to exhibit for sale studio and other work in Downtown Canandaigua Merchants’ windows. Join participating artists and downtown merchants for a chance to meet artists and see their work during the Art Walk and Reception.

Friday, June 9 – Judge’s Evening with Sara Linda Poly (ticketed event)
7:00 – 9:00pm — Painting demonstration by 2017 Judge, Sara Linda Poly, nationally-recognized plein air painter, at Canandaigua Country Club (1 Fallbrook Park, Canandaigua).

9:30am-11:30am — Juried-in artists paint in & around downtown
12:00pm-2:00pm — Judging, show & sale at the Commons (park across from Finger Lakes Gallery and Frame, 175 S Main Street).
12:30pm — Winners announced: Judge’s Choice and People’s Choice

Saturday, June 10 – Community Paint Out  — local & regional artists welcome to paint in specified area in Downtown Canandaigua
10:30am-12:30pm — Registration & Competition
1:30pm-5:00pm — Judging, show & sale (location TBA)
2:00pm – Winners Announced: 1st, 2nd & 3rd Place
Refreshments provided by Ferris Hills at West Lake

Saturday, June 10 – Preview Party & Exhibit – Sonnenberg Gardens (ticketed event) at the Carriage House
6:00-9:00pm — A preview party for artists, sponsors, and art collectors, at which awards will be presented and attendees will be given an early opportunity to purchase the artwork created during the competition. Artists will be in attendance. The awards ceremony will be held during the preview party, at 7 pm. Light fare will be served, with wine sampling and a cash bar.

Sunday, June 11 – Public Exhibit & Sale – Sonnenberg Gardens at the Carriage House (151 Charlotte Street, Canandaigua)
11:00am-4:00pm – FREE & Open to public
Exhibit and sale of artwork created during the competition. The show is free and open to the public. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. 

June 12-13 – 2017 Judge, Sara Linda Poly Workshop (ticketed event)
Time TBA – Sonnenberg Gardens (weather permitting)
This special workshop, presented by the 2017 Finger Lakes Plein Air judge, Sara Linda Poly, will cover composition and design, choosing subject matter, how to use light and shadow, color, and atmospheric perspective to show distance, as well as new ideas for paint application. Demos, critiques and lots of personal attention are included. All levels welcome! Click here to reserve your space.
