Host An Artist

Have you ever wondered what the life of a professional outdoor artist is like?   Or how an artist can transform a moment into an amazing piece of art?

2016 Second Place George Van Hook By opening your home and offering a guest room you not only help an artist offset some costs associated with participating in this year’s 2018 Finger Lakes Plein Air Festival – but you can make a new friend or two in the process.  Over the course of 5 days these artists want to share something quite magical with our community. They are those who live their dream to create.  They follow in the footsteps of those chasing light and color since the early 19th century.  This year we are asking our community to also embrace the storied tradition of welcoming accomplished, itinerant artists who charm the cultures they pay homage to in their paintings.

This premier art event represents over 40 juried in professional artists from across the United States and Canada. Come rain or shine on these dates, our participating artists will be painting all around Canandaigua Lake and surrounding communities to capture the breath-taking lake vistas, waterways, historic neighborhoods, rolling hillsides, lush gardens, incredible farms, and vineyards of our uniquely beautiful region.  Maybe your home, garden or view will become their next inspiration!

“My husband and I were virtually unaware of the Finger Lakes Plein Air Festival when we signed up to host an artist in our home, at the request of our neighbor who was volunteering with the festival. We were blown away by the Finger Lakes Plein Air Festival which brings such talented artists to Canandaigua. Hosting our artist gave us insight to all the activities that happen during Plein Air week and the process of competing in Plein Air festivals. We learned a lot from our participation and feel that hosting our artist was an overwhelmingly great experience. Now, we follow Larry Rudolech (our artist) on Facebook and feel like we have made a lifelong friend who is welcome to visit again anytime. We are looking forward to the 2016 Finger Lakes Plein Air Festival. We will definitely sign up to host again.”

We are seeking hosts who can accommodate 1 artist or 1 artist and their companion/spouse during a time frame including June 5-10th (the main festival dates). A few artists may arrive one day earlier on June 4th to become acquainted with the area, and most depart the morning of June 11th.

2013 Preview Party GalaOur professional artists will make a minimal impact on you and your family’s time, as during most of the festival dates they will be outdoors painting or at events we have arranged for the evenings. As a host you are not required to provide their meals. The festival’s highpoint is our “Preview Exhibition and Sale”, a ticketed event for sponsors and donors held on the evening of June 9th at Sonnenberg Gardens. As a host to an artist you will be invited to attend the Preview Party! On June 10th, the last day of the festival, the exhibit and sale of artwork will be open to the public at Sonnenberg’s Carriage House.

“My husband and I were so glad we decided to step out of our comfort zone and host an artist. From our first conversation with Robert, we knew we would enjoy his stay. Robert was the ideal guest; we were sorry when his stay was over. From him, we learned so much about the Plein Air movement as well as the Plein Air movers and shakers, several of whom were participating in the festival. Because of our decision to host, I feel we became real participants in the event! The benefits of hosting: a life-long friendship, an increased appreciation of Plein Air art, and a commitment to preserving and maintaining the Finger Lakes Plein Air Festival.”
— Joyce and Jim Kowba

We hope you can help! The artists would be so grateful!
