Painting by the juried-in artists will occur over four days, from Tuesday, June 4, through Friday, June 7, 2019. The competition area includes all of Ontario County, NY. Juried-in artists can paint in in oil, soft pastel, watercolor, acrylic and/or gouache. The painting surface (canvas, paper, board) for all events, with ONE exception, may not exceed 16” x 20”, or any other size combination (e.g., 12” x 24”) with a maximum edge limit of 72 inches. For the Canandaigua Wine Trail Paint Out only, there is no size limit on the paintings that may be created, although oversized paintings may be submitted into the main competition only if there is room on the artist’s 4 x 6 foot display panel.
Painting ends on Friday evening, June 7, and paintings must be delivered to historic Sonnenberg Gardens on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning, where they will be hung for the exhibition. The exhibition panel for each artist measures 6 feet tall by 4 feet wide. Only those paintings which fit on the panel may be displayed for sale. You may turn in up to three (3) completed paintings for judging. Two (2) additional plein air works created during the competition can be turned in to be held in reserve on site, for a total of five (5) pieces. Each painting must be framed and ready-to-be-hung with wire. Pastel and water media must be framed with mat, glass, frame & wire without exceeding 20” x 24” (total edge area of 88 inches).
We are honored this year to have distinguished Easton, Maryland artist Hiu Lai Chong as our judge in the main competition. Closed judging begins at 2:30 pm on Saturday, June 8. Once judging takes place, all paintings may be hung if the artist desires and space allows. Prize winners will be determined. Awards include $3,000 for first place, $2,000 for second place, and $1,000 for third place. A number of honorable mentions will also be awarded, along with an Artists’ Choice Award.
The awards ceremony will be held during the preview party held on Saturday evening, June 8, at Sonnenberg Gardens. Your paintings will be offered for sale at this time. There will also be a public Exhibition & Sale at Sonnenberg on Sunday, June 9, with free admission to the gardens and Sonnenberg Mansion. You are expected to attend both of these events. The Ontario County Arts Council (OCAC) will receive 40% of all sales, and you will receive 60%.
Special VOLUNTARY events include a Paint Out along the Canandaigua Wine Trail on Thursday and a Saturday morning Quick Draw in downtown Canandaigua. The Paint Out will be held on Thursday, June 6, in and around Naples, NY. For the Paint Out only, there is no size limit on paintings, although oversize paintings may not be entered in the main competition. Painting will take place all day until 5:30 pm, followed by a wet paint sale and reception from 6 to 8 pm. at a place yet to be decided. The two-hour Quick Draw event for juried-in artists will be held in downtown Canandaigua on Saturday, June 8. Painting will occur from 9:30 am to 11:30 am. Winners will be announced at the Commons on Main Street in the middle of downtown, and prizes awarded. Last year the winner received $500. No pre-registration is required for either event, but all competition rules apply, as well as sales percentages. If you choose to participate in either event, you must bring your own (1) floor easel or small table easel(s) to display your artwork for sale. Quick Draw paintings which do not sell at the Commons may be hung at Sonnenberg. Paint Out paintings which do not sell may be hung at Sonnenberg as long as space is available on your panel.
