2019 Judge Hiu Lai Chong
Meet Hiu Lai Chong…
Our judge for the Eighth Annual Finger Lakes Plein Air Competition in 2019!
Award-winning artist Hiu Lai Chong received her early art training in Hong Kong at the Jockey Club Ti-l College, and earned her AAS degree from Navarro College and BFA degree from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She continued her art education at The Art League in Alexandria and by taking workshops from artists she admires.
Now based in Maryland, Hiu is an oil painter who uses vivid colors and sensitive brushstrokes to express mood and feeling in her paintings. She is inspired by the people she meets, the history and cultures she encounters, and the beauty of nature all around her. Her work often includes unique compositions with a refreshing variety of subject matter.
Hiu’s paintings have been collected by museums, and featured in newspapers, on magazine covers and in books. Her awards include the prestigious Plein Air Easton Grand Prize and Artistʼs Choice Awards, the Laguna Plein Air Collectors’ Choice Award, Maui Plein Air Best in Show, San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts Museum Purchase Award, Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine and South West Art Magazine‘s awards for the “Artist for the New Century” and the Portrait Society of Americaʼs International Portrait Competition Certificate of Excellence.
She is a signature member of Oil Painters of America, American Society of Marine Artists, Laguna Plein Air Painters, Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association and artist member of California Art Club and Washington Society of Landscape Painters. Currently she enjoys teaching workshops when not painting on location or in her studio in Rockville, Maryland.
I have always loved to paint, especially when I’m in the creative zone and no longer aware of my surroundings, it’s only me and the painting. I love being in this state of mind while working.
